We rank systems on what actually matters — real efficiency, cold-climate heat, warranty terms, and total installed cost — and we link you straight to each manufacturer so you can buy direct.
We don't rate on brand reputation or marketing claims. Every efficiency and capacity figure we publish is checked against AHRI-certified ratings and the manufacturer's own specification sheets, and we read each brand's warranty terms in full before it earns a spot on a list. Where a marketing number disagrees with the certified number, we use the certified one.
Our scoring weights six things: DIY-friendliness (pre-charged, quick-connect line sets that skip the vacuum pump and EPA license), certified efficiency, cold-climate heating performance, warranty and U.S. support, value (price per BTU and total installed cost), and noise. Different pages weight these differently — a cold-climate guide leans on heating performance, a DIY guide on installability — so the brand that wins one list won't always win another.
A professional mini split installation typically runs $3,000–$6,000 for a single zone. Choosing the right system — and, where it fits, a true pre-charged DIY unit you can install yourself — can cut roughly $2,000–$4,000 off that bill.
